Understanding Hepatitis C Infection

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that causes inflammation of the liver. It is primarily transmitted through sharing needles or exposure to infected blood, but it can also be transmitted sexually. It is often referred to as a "silent epidemic" because patients can live with the virus for decades without showing any symptoms while the virus slowly damages the liver, potentially leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Highly Curable: Unlike Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C is completely curable. Modern Direct-Acting Antiviral (DAA) pills can cure over 95% of patients with just 8 to 12 weeks of treatment, making early detection via HCV testing incredibly important.

Testing Window Period

Antibodies to the Hepatitis C virus take significant time to develop in the bloodstream.

Reliable Window:

6 to 12 weeks post-exposure. A negative anti-HCV test before 6 weeks is not considered conclusive.

Signs & Symptoms

Most new (acute) infections do not cause symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they are generally mild and easily confused with the flu:

  • Unexplained chronic fatigue
  • Loss of appetite or nausea
  • Dark urine or pale-colored stools
  • Jaundice (late stage indicator)

Sample Requirement

Quick, routine venous blood collection.

Blood Specimen

A certified phlebotomist collects a standard 3-5 ml blood sample. The Anti-HCV assay is performed using separated serum.

No Fasting Required

Fasting is entirely unnecessary. You can visit our Basundhara lab at any time during operational hours to give your sample.

Medical Consultation

Clinical Care at Derma Clinic

A positive Anti-HCV result indicates past or present infection. Don't panic—Hepatitis C is now highly curable. Consult securely with the specialists at Derma Clinic (located in the same building) to discuss confirmatory HCV RNA PCR testing and curative antiviral treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HCV Rapid and CLIA?
Rapid tests use a lateral flow strip for qualitative screening. CLIA utilizes automated robotic technology for vastly superior analytical sensitivity, detecting lower levels of antibodies earlier.
When should I test for Hepatitis C after exposure?
HCV antibodies generally take 6 to 12 weeks to become detectable in the blood. A test taken before 6 weeks may yield a false negative.
Is Hepatitis C curable?
Yes. While Hepatitis C used to be very difficult to treat, modern Direct-Acting Antiviral (DAA) medications can now cure over 95% of Hepatitis C cases within 8 to 12 weeks.
