Understanding Hepatitis B Infection

Hepatitis B is a serious viral infection that attacks the liver. It is highly transmissible and spreads through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids (such as through sexual contact, sharing needles, or from mother to child during birth). While most adults clear the virus naturally (acute infection), some develop a chronic infection which can lead to severe liver damage, cirrhosis, or liver cancer.

HBsAg Explained: The Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is the earliest indicator of an active infection. A positive result indicates that the virus is currently in your blood and you are contagious.

Testing Window Period

HBsAg is the first serological marker to appear following infection with the Hepatitis B virus (HBV).

Reliable Window:

30 to 60 days post-exposure. The highly sensitive CLIA method can often detect antigens slightly earlier than basic rapid strips.

Signs & Symptoms

Many people with Hepatitis B remain completely asymptomatic. If symptoms do occur, they usually appear 1 to 4 months after exposure:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Dark-colored urine and pale stools
  • Extreme fatigue and joint pain
  • Abdominal pain (especially in the upper right quadrant)

Sample Requirement

Quick, routine venous blood collection.

Blood Specimen

A certified phlebotomist collects a standard 3-5 ml blood sample. Both Rapid and CLIA HBsAg tests are performed using separated serum.

No Fasting Required

Fasting is entirely unnecessary for viral marker tests. You can visit our Basundhara lab at any time during operational hours.

Medical Consultation

Clinical Care at Derma Clinic

If your HBsAg is positive, further evaluation is needed to determine if the infection is acute or chronic and to assess liver health. Consult securely with the medical specialists at Derma Clinic (located in the same building) for comprehensive liver function evaluations and management plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HBsAg Rapid and CLIA?
Rapid tests use a lateral flow strip for quick screening. CLIA (Chemiluminescence Immunoassay) uses automated robotics and magnetic microbeads to provide far greater sensitivity, detecting minute viral loads earlier and more accurately.
When should I test for Hepatitis B after exposure?
HBsAg can typically be detected in the blood 30 to 60 days after exposure. Testing before 30 days may result in a false negative.
Do I need to fast before a Hepatitis B test?
No, fasting is not required. You can have your blood drawn at any time of the day without affecting the HBsAg results.
